Best Man Speech Inspiration

I have been fortunate to attend many weddings as a guest and as a videographer and I have seen some AMAZING best man speeches. I thought I’d create a blog post to help out those best-men-to-be’s with a few pointers for their speech.

A good place to start is to introduce yourself and how you know the groom.
You may then choose to insert one of the humorous icebreakers below;
· I’ve known (groom) for X years, he is one of the nicest, funniest, most handsome, sss..smm…. (stuttering), sorry (groom) mate, I can’t read your handwriting.
· According to Google as Best Man I should sing the grooms praises and talk about his good traits. Unfortunately I can’t sing and I won’t lie.
· I read somewhere that a best man speech shouldn’t take any longer than it takes the groom to make love....so ladies and gentleman I give you Mr and Mrs X.
· My speech will be like a miniskirt – long enough to cover the essentials but short enough to hold your attention.
· Often the best man will roast the groom on their special day, I don’t want to do this to my best mate so I’ve excluded all the controversial and embarrassing stories I know and will only mention the good points...thank you and I hope you have a great night.
· I’ve known (groom) for many years and today has been such a special day, one of the most memorable yet, (groom) after X years has finally admitted that I really am the best man.
Next you could comment on how nice the bride and bridesmaids look and then tell a story or two about the bride perhaps a light hearted / nice story about when you first met her, something that the groom said about her in the early days and / or how the positive attributes you’ve noticed in him when he’s with her.

From there you could tell a couple of memorable stories about you and the groom that shows how much of a great, fun guy he is.
You might choose to add a few jokes throughout your speech so I’ve listed a few of my faves below;
· I have to say, (groom) you are SUCH a lucky guy, you leave here today having gained a wife that is kind, loving, caring, funny and stunning. And (bride) you’re so lucky too, having gained a GORGEOUS dress and a lovely bouquet of flowers.
· There are 3 types of wedding rings – engagement rings, wedding rings and suffer-ring
· At this point in my speech I’d like to acknowledge the important people in the room, starting with the bar staff.
Comment on what a lovely day it has been, and an honour to stand beside your best mate today, thank everyone for being a part of it.
You can finish with offering the happy couple some advice, before wishing the happy couple the very best of luck for all their endeavours.
What to do
Write your speech on cue cards and have them handy, practice reading your speech to someone else and get them to time it (anywhere from 3-5min is usually a good length to aim for), have them also give you feedback.
What not to do
Don’t mention ex’s, don’t tell stories which will embarrass and upset the bride, groom or their families, don’t tell stories for ‘had to be there moments’ or that are longwinded that might lose the audiences attention.
I’ll be creating a series of blog posts for ideas and inspiration so be sure to like my Facebook page to keep up to date! www.facebook.com/annacudbyvideography
